Get to Know Ruby Throated HummingbirdsKnown as North America’s sole breeding hummingbird, the ruby-throated hummingbird can be easily spotted by their flash of green and red colors as it flies by.  Ruby-throated hummingbirds can be best identified by their bright color pattern, including an emerald green color found on their back and crown as well as gray-white under parts.  With the ability to fly straight and fast while stopping instantaneously, ruby-throated hummingbirds can change their flying position with exquisite control and accuracy.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are known for their very high metabolism, due in part to the amazing speed at which they flap their wings and fly around.  When looking for food and nectar, these hummingbirds prefer colorful, tubular flowers including trumpet creeper, honeysuckle, and red morning glory flowers as a nectar source.

These amazing creatures can be found within the deciduous woodlands of eastern North America as well as in Canada during the warmer months of the year.  Once the weather turns cooler, this species spends their winter in places such as Mexico or even Central America.  To get a better view of where these hummingbirds can be found, take a look at our migration map.  Here, you can submit sightings of hummingbirds or just check in to see what hummingbirds have been spotted in your area!

The ruby-throated hummingbirds are only one out of many species of hummingbirds found within North America.  As such a remarkable species, these little birds are the perfect addition to any backyard bird watching enthusiast.  Check out our hummingbird species library to learn more about the various species of hummingbirds you can attract to your backyard!
